OLEAN – The Olean City School District Foundation, OHS Sports Booster Club and City of Olean have reached a three-year agreement to keep the annual Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament on Delaware St. in downtown Olean.

The agreement specifies that the Macker will be held on Agusut 15-17 in 2014; August 14-16 in 2015; and August 19-21 in 2016.

“The Gus Macker is an Olean event, and should be played on the city’s streets,” said John Irving, chairman of the Gus Macker Committee. “The area businesses, along with the city, are very supportive of us, and are certainly a part of the event’s success.”

The Gus Macker has been played annually in Olean for the past six years, and in that time has raised more than $100,000 for the Olean City School District Foundation and the Olean Sports Booster Club. On average, more than 1,000 players and 4,000 people travel to Olean for the event. All money raised has directly enhanced both educational and athletic programs for children in the Olean City School District.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to extend our agreement with the city and keep the Gus Macker in its current location, where it’s worked so well over the past six years,” said Adam Bennett, president of the Olean City School District Foundation. “I’d like to thank Mayor Witte and Tom Windus for their commitment to this event, and for their support of our organizations.”

The Macker is open to players of all ages and experience levels. Brackets are matched by age, height and experience so all participants may have an enjoyable and competitive experience. Gus Macker began in Lowell, Michigan in 1974, and has since evolved to a family event with food, music, and basketball, all taking place on the streets of downtown Olean.

“I’m excited that we’ve extended the Gus Macker for another three years in the city of Olean,” said Jeff Spears, president of the OHS Sports Booster Club. “This is a great benefit to the city, booster club and foundation.”

The Olean City School District Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 volunteer organization which supports extra effort and creativity to enhance all aspects of the Olean City School District, including academic programs, athletics and the arts.

The Olean Sports Booster Club works to enhance athletic programs and events within the Olean City School District.
