The Olean City School District (OCSD) Foundation announced the induction of three individuals to the district’s Academic Wall of Fame. Gail Bagazzoli, Brigadier General Christopher Eddy and Phyllis Marcus make up the 2014 class of inductees, and will be honored at the 131st Annual Olean High School Alumni Banquet at Premier Banquet Center on Saturday, June 21.
Mrs. Bagazzoli has spent her career working as a healthcare professional in the region. After graduating from the University of Miami (Fla.), where she was inducted into the nursing honor society, Mrs. Bagazzoli began working as a Medical Surgical Nurse at Olean General Hospital. She later elevated to Clinical Education Manager, Nurse Manager of the Emergency Department, and Director of Infection Prevention and Control at the hospital. In 2014, Mrs. Bagazzoli was named Vice President of Quality for Upper Allegheny Health System, the governing organization of Olean General Hospital and Bradford Regional Medical Center. In 2003, Mrs. Bagazzoli was honored as Western New York’s Nurse of Distinction, which recognizes registered professional nurses who demonstrate significant achievement in nursing practice and leadership. She is the president of the Kathi Ward Foundation, which supports the nursing profession in Cattaraugus County by providing annual scholarships to students interested in pursing a career in the field. Additionally, she serves as a program coordinator for the Association of Professionals in Infection Control, is actively involved with the American Heart Association, and has served on area nursing school advisory boards for more than 25 years.
Brigadier General Eddy, a 1982 graduate of Olean High, dedicated more than three decades of his life to serving his country. A graduate of Ashland University, Mr. Eddy earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Golden Gate University in San Francisco, and another in International Relations from Troy State in Alabama. He later received a PhD in Management, Leadership and Organizational Change from Walden University in Minneapolis. After working with the United States Southern Command as a senior intelligence officer, and the Department of Homeland Security as a current analysis cell chief, Mr. Eddy was named intelligence program manager for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Miami, Fla. In his time with the Air Force, Mr. Eddy has served on Travis Air Force Base in California, Osan Air Base in South Korea, Langley Air Force Base in Virginia, the US European Command in Germany, and the Pentagon. He’s earned a number of awards for his service in the military, including the Air Force Achievement Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Medal and the prestigious Legion of Merit.
Mrs. Marcus is an accomplished educator who has dedicated her life’s work to enriching the lives of students around the globe. She was valedictorian of her class at Eldred (Pa.) High School, and later graduated with honors from Mansfield University. In her time as a first grade teacher in the Olean City School District, Mrs. Marcus published a sequential phonics guide which was distributed throughout the nation for teachers, provided free tutoring with children of all levels in math and reading, and negotiated a significant grant to bring the Challenger Learning Center to the greater Olean area. Following her retirement from the school system, Mrs. Marcus volunteered her time teaching at New Life Christian School, and continued to provide free tutoring for more than 25 children per week. She has helped several underprivileged individuals learn to read and write, and even mentored a teacher in South America so he could come to the United States and obtain his doctorate degree. Mrs. Marcus received the Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce’s “Good News” Award in 2001, and was a six-time recipient of the area’s “Who’s Who” recognition.
