John McCarthy, Ph.D.

Dr. John McCarthy is a professor in the Department of Counseling at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), where he’s taught since 2001. McCarthy has directed the university’s Center for Counselor Training and Services since its inception in 2005.

Dr. McCarthy also taught at St. Bonaventure University, Slippery Rock University, and National Chengchi University in the Republic of China. He received his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri – Kansas City, and completed his pre-doctoral internship at the University of Florida. Dr. McCarthy has Masters Degrees from the University of Arizona and St. Bonaventure University.

Dr. McCarthy’s interests include cognitive therapy, motivational interviewing and adolescent depression. Five of John’s siblings also graduated from Olean High, and his father was a teacher at OHS in the 1940’s.
